Bonbibi ( Bengali : বনবিবি , banbibi ; roughly translated: "Jungle woman ") is a regional protective deity who is worshiped in the villages of the Sundarbans by both Hindu and Muslim loggers and hunters. It protects people, especially wild honey collectors, from attacks by tigers, for example, who are assigned to the deity Dakshin Rai . In order to maintain this protection, people are not allowed to leave any human traces in the forest. This, for example, avoids spitting out saliva.
