Bonnington Pavilion

The Bonnington Pavilion , also Corra Linn Pavilion or Hall of Mirrors , is a pavilion near the Scottish town of Lanark in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1980 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The pavilion was built in 1708 on the site of the Bonnington House mansion . The mansion has meanwhile been demolished. In 1769 the pavilion was described as deserted. Presumably it was restored with the construction of the new Bonnington House by John Lockhart-Ross in the 1770s. Lockhart-Ross is also credited with installing the mirrors inside and arranging the staircase leading to the Corra Linn waterfalls . In the 1830s, several hiking trails ran along the pavilion. At that time it was accessible for a fee. The building has been neglected since the 1990s at the latest. In 2008 the pavilion was added to the register of endangered buildings in Scotland. Its condition is classified as a ruin, but with moderate danger.

description

The Bonnington Pavilion stands on a cliff halfway between the New Lanark industrial estate and the Bonnington hydropower station . It offers a panorama over the Corra Linn waterfalls. With its year of construction, it is the earliest building in Scotland that was built to observe a natural panorama. It is also one of the first early classical buildings in Scotland.

The two-story building has a square floor plan. The east-facing front of the two-story building is three axes wide. The entrance portal on the upper floor is accessible via a front staircase. The masonry on the ground floor is rusticated, as are the corner stones . While stone blocks were built on this side, the masonry on the other sides consists of quarry stone and was once plastered with Harl . Building openings are framed with profiles. The portal closes with an architrave .
