The Book of Leinster ( old Irish Lebor Laignech [ 'Lʴevor' Laɣʴnʴex ]) which is also known under the name Book of Oughaval , is a medieval manuscript created around 1160. It is kept in Trinity College in Dublin . It had previously been kept in Oughaval for many generations. Some parts of the book, such as the Tallaght Martyrology, are in the collection of University College Dublin .

content

The manuscript consists of 187 sheets with a format of approximately 33 cm by 23 cm. A note within the manuscript suggests that around 45 pages have been lost. The book contains a vast collection of content and is one of the most important sources on medieval Irish literature, genealogy and mythology. It includes texts such as: Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of Invasions), the most complete version of Táin Bó Cuailnge (The Driving Away of the Cattle from Cuailnge), the Dindsenchas , the Bóruma , an Irish translation of De excidio Troiae Historia , and up to before its separation from the ledger, the Martyrology of Tallaght .

Dating

The manuscript is a collection and appears to have been written by several authors. The main author seems to have been Áed Ua Crimthainn , whose signature can be found in the book under the following title: Aed mac meic Crimthaind ro scrib in leborso 7 ra thinoil a llebraib imdaib ("Áed Húa Crimthaind wrote this book and collected it from many books" ).

From the annals of the manuscript it can be concluded that it was written between 1151 and 1201, with the largest part likely being written in the 1160s.
