Boat void

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bootes Void (dt. About Bootes-Void , also written with Trema as Boötes Void ) is one of the largest known Voids . It is a spherical region of space with a diameter of around 300 million light years that contains very few galaxies. Its redshift is around 0.05 (15,500 km / s), which corresponds to a distance of around 650 million light years . Seen from the earth, the center of the Void lies in the eponymous constellation Bootes (bear guardian).

The discovery of the Void was made in 1981 by Kirshner et al. published as part of a study of the redshift distribution of galaxies. In later studies, the few galaxies in the void (e.g. IRAS 15479 + 5121 ) were the focus.
