Boat trailers are special road-going trailers for transporting boats on the road. They are basically to be distinguished from slip trolleys that are specially designed to be dropped into the water and pulled ashore. However, some boat trailers can be used as launching trolleys and are then often specially constructed.

Admission

In Germany, boat trailers could take part in road traffic as sports trailers without their own license plate until 1992 . A second production of the license plate of the towing vehicle was enough to attach to the trailer. A separate approval with a green license plate has been required since 1992 . With the approval, both an ABE and a test report according to § 29 Road Traffic Licensing Regulations must be submitted.

Even the boat trailer must not be wider than 2.55 m and higher than 4 m when loaded. There are braked, unbraked, single-axis or multi-axis versions, depending on the permissible total weight. There is a special standard for boat trailers (DIN 14962) for the BOS and fire service area.
