In the accident off the Libyan coast at the end of March 2017, two rigid inflatable boats were damaged. According to the UNHCR, up to 250 people could have drowned.

The Spanish rescue organization Proactiva Open Arms reported two sunken inflatable boats 14 miles off the Libyan coast. On March 23, five bodies were recovered. They were young men between 16 and 25 years old from Africa. In addition to Open Arms, other aid organizations, including the German Jugend Rettet , were involved in the operation. The remaining crew members remained missing. Proactiva Open Arms and the UNHCR assume that up to 120 people could have been in each boat, as experience has shown that tugs of such boats would be so overloaded.
