The box spring bed , also known as an American bed or continental bed , is a sleeping system in which, instead of a slatted frame, a sprung frame forms the basis. Box spring means spring core box and essentially describes the structure of the underframe. The box spring, i.e. the base, consists of a frame, which is usually made of solid wood and surrounds the suspension.

Box springs are usually equipped with Bonell springs ( spring core or pocket spring core ). Depending on the manufacturer, several different layers of springs can already be processed in the box spring frame. A mattress and, depending on the construction variant, an additional topper lie on the box spring. Box spring beds are particularly popular in the United States and Canada , but they also have a long tradition in Scandinavia . In Germany, the demand for the system originally known as the box mattress is increasing.

Inside of a box spring bed

There are various possible structures for box spring beds. In contrast to the beds commonly used in Germany , the mattress does not lie on a slatted frame, but the box spring forms the basis for all variants. There is a mattress on top. The so-called American box spring bed is usually a very thick mattress that is often up to 30 centimeters high. Often a mattress pad, a so-called topper, is also placed on top, and the mattress is usually covered in the upholstery fabric of the bed.

Box spring

Boxsprings are commercially available under the name Federkernbox , spring frame or divan base known. A massive frame, mostly made of wood, encloses the suspension. The box spring is fabric-covered and stands on feet, which should ensure the necessary air circulation underneath. The bed feet are usually no higher than 20 cm.

Mattress in the box spring bed

In principle, any type of mattress can be used as a box spring mattress, the dimensions of which must be matched to the size of the lower bed. Mattresses with a spring core / Bonell, barrel pocket spring core, latex , visco or cold foam are used.

Topper

The topper mattress, called topper for short , forms the end of the box spring bed. This is a mat a few centimeters thick that is supposed to increase sleeping comfort in every lying position and is gentle on the mattress underneath. The topper often consists of virgin sheep's wool, horsehair, cold foam, viscoelastic material or latex and usually a cover that can be removed for hygienic reasons. As a continuous topper, it creates a common lying area in the double bed. There are also toppers with barrel pocket springs.

Advantages and disadvantages

By layering up to three components on top of each other, the box spring bed achieves a comfortable height that makes it easier for older people to get in and out of the bed. However, this can also be achieved with a higher conventional bed frame, which offers the advantage of storage space under the bed.

The box spring bed offers constant support over the entire lying surface and therefore usually does not have a multi-zone division that supports the body.

A lack of standardization of the mattresses also makes it difficult to find a suitable mattress, as these can differ greatly in terms of hardness.

The Stiftung Warentest comes to the conclusion that the design often does not keep what manufacturers and retailers promise. The foundation attests to some of the models tested as having good lying properties; In terms of durability, the box spring beds often only achieve the marks “satisfactory” or “sufficient”. When it comes to handling, some products even have a "poor" rating.

Alternatives

As an alternative to a full box spring bed, there are so-called box spring mattresses and box spring slatted frames. A box spring mattress consists of two Bonell or spring cores that are located in a mattress. Such box spring mattresses can be up to 35 cm high and offer the advantage that not the entire bed has to be replaced, only the mattress. A box spring slatted frame has an additional suspension made of Bonell springs and a foam cover. This double suspension should create a lying feeling similar to that of a box spring bed.
