Business Directory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A business directory or business directory is a directory of companies sorted by industry . It can be in both printed and digital form.

A business directory usually provides alphabetically ordered listings of companies in a defined geographical region (e.g. Munich or Bavaria), which in turn are subdivided into industries (e.g. carpenters).

history

The first printed business directory can be traced back to Reuben Donelley's company "DEX One" and was launched in Texas in 1886. In Germany, the first business directories were published at the end of the 19th century. In addition to the yellow pages , there have always been other business directories, mostly with a special regional focus. The term "yellow pages" is not a protected term in many countries and is a categorical term for business directories in the USA, for example.

Business directories were traditionally published by telephone companies (e.g. DeTeMedien ), but there are now numerous private providers. Business directories are usually published annually and distributed free of charge to households and businesses in the relevant region. Financing is usually done through advertising or preferred list positions. There are also specialized business directories, for example for handicrafts and construction.

After the liberalization of the postal and telecommunications market in Germany, since 1992 and 1994, under certain conditions, competing providers have also been able to access the official subscriber data of Deutsche Telekom or its legal entities .

Business directories such as Yelp or KlickTel are also available online. The information available usually includes company details such as address, phone number, email address and website. In addition, additional services such as maps or route planners are sometimes offered. From a global perspective, there is a trend that Internet offers are replacing printed versions. As of 2011, however, more than 70% of sales in the industry are still generated by printed business directories and only 30% by online offers.
