A fire protection strip is a measure that effectively restricts the spread of fire through the facade. In the case of a thermal insulation composite system facade , the terms fire protection bulkhead or fire (protection) bar are usually used. A rear-ventilated curtain facade is usually referred to as a fire barrier .

Protection goal

A full fire in a room and the resulting window burnout mean that the storey immediately above lies completely in the flame area, regardless of any combustible parts of the facade. Even the fire protection strip cannot protect it. The next but one floor is also thermally attacked by the flame tips. This means that the projectile to be protected is the second one above the primary source of the fire. The fire protection strip therefore has to effectively limit the spread of fire through the facade up to this floor.

In the case of composite thermal insulation system facades, either fire bars over the window lintels or fire bars running completely around a floor. The fire bars are mostly made of mineral wool , but there are also some made of other materials, e.g. B. Polyurethane .

In the case of curtain-type, rear-ventilated facades , fire barriers are used that interrupt or partially reduce the free cross-section of the rear-ventilation space. An effective fire barrier, for example, is a continuous profile made of sheet steel (minimum thickness 1 mm) attached to the outer wall, which protrudes at least 20 cm from the facade.
