The Brede Waterworks Tramway was a 1899 run to 1935 1.5 km long narrow gauge - works railway in Brede, Sussex with a track width of 457 mm (18 inches ).

history

For the construction and operation of the pumps operated by steam engines at Brede Waterworks , a field railway with a gauge of 457 mm (18 inches) was laid, which led from a jetty on the Brede River to the waterworks. The rails weighed 8 kg / m (16 pounds per yard) per meter.

A steam locomotive was used to transport building materials. There were also four open three-tonne bogie cars available. After the construction work was completed, the field railway operated by the steam locomotive was retained to bring coal from the quay to the waterworks and to supply the boilers for the steam engines. A pony was used as a draft animal when the steam locomotive was out of service.

Although no public passenger transport was offered, the light rail occasionally carried passengers, e.g. B. visited the waterworks as a representative of Hastings Corporation. Sacks filled with straw served as makeshift seats on the open car. In the 1920s, the Brede was no longer navigable, so that the section of the light railway leading to the river was closed. The coal was then moved from Doleham Halt on the Ashford - Hastings route to a transfer hall built about 150 yards north of the jetty.

After a road to the waterworks was built, the field railway was taken out of service in 1937. The coal was then delivered by truck directly from Hastings train station to the waterworks. The rails were later dismantled. In 1964 the steam engines were replaced by electric pumps, after which the steam boilers were scrapped. The building is under Grade II monument protection .

locomotive

The locomotive was a 0-4-0 T steam locomotive of the Mercedes class , which was delivered by WG Bagnall with the factory number 1560/1899. In the beginning she was called Brede . In 1923 a new boiler was installed. The locomotive was rebuilt around 1931 because the water tanks had to be replaced. The locomotive was taken out of service in 1935 due to wear and tear and then scrapped.
