Breguet spiral

Breguet spiral

The Breguet spring is a particularly shaped coil spring of the balance wheel . Thanks to two knee-shaped bends in the third dimension, the last spiral loop is guided over the otherwise flat spiral. This allows the spiral to “breathe” concentrically, which leads to increased accuracy . For further explanations see balance .

The Breguet hairspring with its upturned outer end curve was developed by the watchmaker Abraham Louis Breguet (1747–1823) around 1795. It is still used today, although there were end curve shapes later developed by other watchmakers (e.g. by Édouard Phillips or Gustav Gerstenberger ).
