BORDA eV ( B remen O verseas R eSearch and D evelopment A ssociation) is a civic trade organization for local interest with focus on decentralized urban sanitation and their integration into municipal planning.

BORDA has set itself the task of shaping the transition to livable and inclusive cities together with more than 100 partner organizations worldwide. Disadvantaged urban population groups should be given access to municipal basic services.

BORDA was founded in 1977 by citizens of Bremen interested in development policy as a non-profit association. The first project was Technology Transfer of Biogas India-Ethiopia . In 2018, BORDA is active in 22 countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. In 2018, BORDA has regional offices in Jordan, India, Indonesia, Mexico and Tanzania. The regional offices are connected to local partner organizations to form the global Basic Needs Network .

BORDA combines environmentally friendly and decentralized infrastructure development with participatory municipal planning and sustainable operator structures. With local partners, BORDA designs and implements sanitation, promotes capacity development at the local, national and international level and the dialogue between civil society organizations, municipalities, government agencies, the private sector, scientific institutions and international organizations.

BORDA participates in the development of structural legal framework conditions and the formulation of political goals and agendas.
