A wallet is a breast pocket-sized, usually collapsible, flat container for ID cards , paper money , folded documents and other items. A wallet was originally used to carry letters from its owner, after the introduction of paper money it was then also used to store banknotes .

Wallets are made of leather , sometimes textile fabric, and are often carried in the inner breast pockets of men's jackets. The dimensions of the jacket inner pockets and the wallets are usually mutually coordinated and are a little more than a double-folded DIN A4 or a whole DIN A6 format, i.e. about 17 × 12 cm in length and width.

With the increasingly scaled-down format of identification cards and the use of credit cards for large amounts of money, the wallet is increasingly being used by the wallet .
