history

Monastery building in the 1880s

Izabella Siemaszko, the wife of the castellan of Bracław (Brazlaw) tried to found a convent of brigands in Lutsk. In 1624 the first nuns and priests came from Lublin. The Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and former Starost of Lutsk Albrecht Stanisław Radziwiłł gave them a piece of land and part of the castle. The convent received further extensive donations from nobles and citizens and was soon able to have its own monastery buildings and a church built.

The nuns founded a school for the daughters of the nobility, which also welcomed middle-class girls from the city and orphans.

In 1648 they had to flee to the Warsaw monastery because of the Khmelnytskyi uprising, and the complex was badly damaged. City fires in 1664 and 1781 caused further damage, after which the buildings were repaired.

Since 1795, after the Third Partition of Poland, the area belonged to the Russian Empire. In 1845 a small fire broke out in the roof of the monastery. However, the nuns denied fire-fighters access to the site and the wind spread the fire to neighboring buildings, causing the most devastating fire in the city's history. Much of the monastery property was then confiscated for reparation. In 1878 the Brigittenkloster was dissolved.

After renovations in which most of the stucco and decorative elements were removed, a prison was established in the building in 1890. It has been used as a museum since 1960.

Currently, part of the building houses a monastery of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Other parts are used by municipal institutions.
