The Bristol Lodekka was a double - decker bus built by Bristol Commercial Vehicles in England with a lower overall height than the other British double-decker bus types , so that it could also be used on roads with low bridges .

Bristol Commercial Vehicles produced over 5,200 units for the UK state bus operators between 1949 and 1968. All vehicles had a body manufactured by the Eastern Coach Works (ECW) . The bus had a half-sided cab. The lower deck was made lower in order to reduce the overall height of the vehicle. The first buses of the LD series as well as the FL and FS series had access for passengers at the rear via a platform with the stairs to the upper deck. In the FSF and FLF series , the entrance and the stairs were located directly behind the front axle. Most vehicles were five- or six-cylinder diesel engines from Gardner driven in some engines were from Bristol or Leyland used. After one-man operation (without conductors) for double-decker buses was legally permitted in Great Britain from the end of the 1960s, the Lodekkas were increasingly replaced by more modern buses with entrances in front of the front axle (e.g. Leyland Atlantean and Bristol VRT ). Some of the Lodekkas were used as driving school vehicles. The company Top Deck Travel built about a hundred buses to 1973-1997 decker home to -Wohnmobilen. Purchasers of Lodekka were different bus companies in the UK. London-based bus companies did not procure Lodekkas , but the bus was used by the Thames Valley and Eastern National bus companies on routes to the British capital.

The Bristol Lodekka was also produced by Dennis under license and sold as Dennis Loline .

In the 1970s, the bus was popularized by the British television series On the Buses with Reg Varney and Bob Grant .
