The bread crime is a term from the medieval legend . One commits bread crimes by treating the food bread dishonorably and wastefully. Mostly the careless and inappropriate use or failure to share with starving people for selfish or proud reasons is meant. In legends and fairy tales, bread crimes are usually punished by a supernatural authority.

In the legend of the Stolzenburg in the Eifel , the lords of the castle were sunk by the Lord together with their castle for using hard-baked bread for skittles and then feeding this bread to their farm animals instead of to their poor subjects.
