Brother Singer with the subtitle Songs of our People is a songbook with well-known German songs and folk songs , which was first published in 1951 by Bärenreiter-Verlag and comprised 327 songs with texts and sheet music . The editors were Hermann Peter Gericke , Hugo Moser , Alfred Quellmalz and Karl Vötterle , founder and director of the Bärenreiter publishing house. The illustrations of the headers for the individual parts came from Paula Jordan . According to the publisher, the collection was created on behalf of the working group for domestic and youth music . In the 1958 edition at the latest, chord symbols were added to many songs in an arrangement by Wilhelm Gebhard to accompany the song in “the simplest harmonization”. The collection was also expanded to 388 songs. In most of the federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany , the songbook was approved for school use.

The brother Singer appeared in several editions, with the 167th – 176th in 1958. A thousand copies sold has been reached.

In addition, according to the publisher, editions for choirs, an edition with piano accompaniment and a Little Brother Singer appeared .

Surname

The brother Singer first appeared under this name in 1951. The motto of the song collection was preceded by a saying by Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel (1775–1843):

SPEAK,
and you are my fellow man
SING,
and we are brothers
and sisters!

According to the publisher, the subtitle Songs of our People refers to a songbook that was first published in 1933, expanded in 1938 after the " Anschluss of Austria " to include the section We are one people and sold under the title Songs of our People . In contrast to this forerunner, the selection of songs in the Brother Singer was adjusted by eliminating the National Socialist songs and recording Christian songs instead.
