Half-length portrait of a girl (Andrea del Verrochio)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A portrait of a girl is a half-relief that was created around 1460. It is attributed to the Italian sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio . Presumably it was made as a replica of a marble relief . It is owned by the Kaiser Friedrich Museum Association and is part of the Sculpture Collection and Museum of Byzantine Art , with its seat in the Bode Museum in Berlin .

description

The work of art is a flat, painted half-relief made of stucco with the dimensions 52 × 41 × 8 cm. It depicts a young girl with a half-bared breast in profile on a pale blue-greenish background. The girl has auburn, slightly wavy hair that is held together by a strong red ribbon. At the back, the hair falls loosely down. She wears a yellowish, stiff robe that falls forward from her shoulders and reveals her chest to the viewer. According to Bode , the robe could be made of moiré fabric .

The work is a half-relief with a semicircular end. The bust is framed by a gilded frame, which is also made of stucco.

Only remnants of the originally rich gilding and painting of the work can be seen today.

function

Stucco replicas were mainly used in the circles of the Florentine Quattrocento artists. In addition to stucco, other inexpensive materials such as paper, clay or wood were also used.

History and provenance

The work was accepted by Wilhelm von Bode as a gift for the Berlin collection in 1912 . The attribution by name was still unclear at the time of acquisition.

It is believed to be a replica of a marble relief that is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London . It came into the possession of the London Museum from the private collection of Henry Vaugham. There it was initially attributed to Desiderio da Settignano . It is now assigned to Andrea del Verrocchio . The London variant and another, comparable work in marble, which is in the Museo d'Arte Antica in Milan , also show a younger, scantily clad woman with a cut-out dress on an oval plate. To this day it is not clear whether the representations should be viewed as portraits .
