A chest strap is a harness developed from the climbing harness around a life jacket for whitewater paddling .

The first belted vest came on the market in 1981. The climbing harnesses used previously could not be opened under load. In 1986, the first vest with a chest strap with multiple deflection allowed an assistant to be secured. A cowtail with a kayak carabiner can be attached to the chest strap to rescue a capsized canoeist . To ensure a solution, the multiple redirection should not be used. The kayak carabiner can be hooked in better thanks to its protruding catch. When securing with a life throw linehowever, the metal plate should be used for strain relief. The chest strap is not suitable for securing when climbing or abseiling. Although not intended for this, the chest strap is also used for material recovery.
