Penance service

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Penitential services are a communal form of examination of conscience and the confession of sins . The Roman Catholic Church has been offering them especially since the Second Vatican Council , especially in the penance times of the church year , Advent and Lent . Such penitential services serve as a common preparation for receiving the sacrament of penance ; they do not replace it.

As a rule, penitential services are a celebration of the Word of God with a special penitential part, e.g. B. can consist of an examination of conscience, a common prayer, a penance psalm or a hymn. Usually the common admission of guilt follows with the request for forgiveness.
