Enyalios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ares-Enyalios is often depicted with his sword, helmet and shield symbols. Representations of Enyalios as an independent deity are not known.

Enyalios ( ancient Greek Ἐνυάλιος 'the warrior' , Latin Enyalius ) is usually an epithet of Ares in Greek mythology , but he also occurs as an independent deity.

He is known as the god of battle or the god of the sword. According to stories he is the son of Ares and Aphrodite and thus brother of Eros and his most important companion. Another account is that Enyalios came out of a brief relationship with the pretty girl Aleithina that Ares had lost. He is portrayed as very pretty, but also as very cruel and cold-blooded, he is also said to have many exiles, but he had no offspring. Enyalos is the twin of Enyo and the brother of the many children of Ares and Aphrodite - so he is very close to Deimos and Phobos . Often he is depicted in armor, because he has inherited the warlike part of his father. His beauty, which rather embellishes and also hides the wild strength and the sadism associated with him , is regarded as an inheritance from his mother.

Enyalios in primary literature

In the comedy The Peace of Aristophanes , Enyalios is briefly mentioned as an independent demon of war in the seventh scene of the first act.
