Lexicon of antiquity

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lexicon of antiquity is one of the most widespread lexicons on classical antiquity in the German-speaking world.

The Lexicon of Antiquity was one of the first major projects to be implemented in the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , which was newly created in 1969 . It was published by the Graecist Johannes Irmscher in conjunction with Renate Johne , with the editorial work primarily in Johnes hands. Almost all of the expertise of the ancient scholars of the GDR was combined for the lexicon. With the exception of Hildegard Waldner-Boková , the 112 authors came from the academy, universities or museums of the GDR. The lexicon, which is more than seven hundred pages long, had ten editions at the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig between its first edition from 1971 to 1990 in the GDR alone . In addition, there are licensed editions in the West German Heyne Verlag as Das große Lexikon der Antike in several editions since 1974, in Fourier-Verlag in Wiesbaden and in eight editions in Bindlacher Gondrom- Verlag. In addition, the lexicon was translated into Estonian and published in 1985 in the second edition as Antiigileksikon in the Tallinn Valgus publishing house. So far, the lexicon was published in paperback by Heyne in 1994. There is also the lexicon as an electronic resource at Directmedia Publishing ( digital library , volume 18), where it was published three times between 1999 and 2004.

The content of the lexicon consists of several thousand mostly short articles. There are also 600 drawings and 200 illustrations on 54 picture panels. The work is supplemented by an appendix with genealogical tables of Greek mythology as well as the Roman ruling dynasties and lists of rulers of the Hellenistic rulers and the Roman emperors. The short bibliography mainly includes older literature and works by GDR authors. In terms of content, the lexicon includes all subject areas of ancient studies, classical philology, ancient history, classical archeology as well as related and auxiliary sciences such as epigraphy , numismatics , papyrology , legal history , philosophy and the history of religion . In addition, there is the history of reception, which is mostly ignored in many comparable works. Peripheral areas, such as the Ancient Near Eastern Studies , the Near Eastern Archeology , the Egyptology , the prehistory or Celtic studies found only limited precipitation in the lexicon. The articles are based on Marxist doctrine , historical materialism , but are generally not dogmatic. In various editions, the changing attitudes of the GDR's ancient history to certain ideologically important keywords, such as the article on slavery , which has been changed several times , can be observed and has thus become a historical document in itself.

At the lexicon antiquity to the other encyclopedias oriented of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, the Encyclopedia of the Renaissance and the lexicon Ancient Near East , the latter was written by a large editorial team, but only four specialist authors.
