Burkhard Boettger

Burkhard Böttger (born November 30, 1934 in Berlin ; † October 28, 2015 there ) was a German archaeologist .

Life

Burkhard Böttger attended the Pforta state school near Naumburg from 1948 to 1954 . He then studied Classical Philology and Classical Archeology at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Since completing his basic studies and until 1990 he worked at the Institute for Greco-Roman Antiquity of the German Academy of Sciences and at the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . He took part in excavations in Roman fort in Iatrus-Krivina and in Karasura in Bulgaria and was editor-in-chief of the magazine Das Altertum for six years . In 1966 he received his doctorate from Humboldt University. In 1978 he was with a thesis on pottery from the fort Jatrus to Dr. sc. habilitation .

From 1990 he worked on the imperial amphorae , then the imperial lamp from the excavations of the German Archaeological Institute at Kerameikos in Athens .

From 1992 Böttger worked in the Prehistory and Protohistory Department of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin and from 1995 until his retirement in 1999 in the newly founded Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute and advisor for the German-Russian excavations in Tanais am Don .

Böttger published numerous articles on his excavations in Bulgaria and Russia as well as on the finds and gave numerous lectures at archaeological congresses. In addition to his archaeological publications, Böttger made a name for himself as a specialist translator from Russian and Bulgarian. Böttger was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
