Reimar Müller (born August 30, 1932 in Jena ; † April 9, 2020 ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Reimar Müller passed his Abitur in 1951, then studied history and from 1952 to 1957 classical philology at the University of Jena . He passed the state examination in 1957 and was a high school teacher until 1959. In 1959 he switched to the Institute for Greco-Roman Antiquity of the German Academy of Sciences (later Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR) in Berlin . The doctorate on the subject of the evaluation of the educational disciplines at Cicero with Friedmar Kühnert and Johannes Irmscher took place in 1963. In 1969 he became department head there and in 1970 he completed his habilitation ( doctorate B ) with Johannes Irmscher, Rudolf Schottlaender and Marie Simon on the subject of Epicurean social theory (social and legal philosophy) . In September 1977 Müller was appointed professor at the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (ZIAGA). There he was deputy director from 1980 to 1990 and from 1985 to 1990 head of the Greek-Roman cultural history department .

In 1981 Müller was elected a corresponding member and in 1989 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1993 he was a founding member of the Leibniz Society for Science in Berlin . At the end of the 1980s, Müller was also a member of the Presidium of the GDR Historian Society .

Scientific work

In the GDR, Müller was an important academic organizer in the field of classical antiquity with an international presence (UNESCO, Naples, Tbilisi, Madrid). He accompanied several major projects of the academy, such as the two-volume cultural history of antiquity , or was involved in them. His research focused on the history of culture and literature as well as the history of ancient philosophy and historical anthropology .
