Cultural history of antiquity

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cultural history of antiquity is a two-volume handbook on the cultural history of ancient cultures .

The cultural history of antiquity was one of the ambitious large-scale projects of the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , which was created after the reorganization of the academy under the direction of archaeologist Joachim Herrmann . In the institute, based on the planned economy in industry and agriculture, certain topics were dealt with. One of the first of these projects was the two-volume cultural history of antiquity project , in which not only well-known academy employees but also important scientists from universities and museums in the GDR were involved. The first volume, Greece , appeared in 1976, Volume 2, Rome , 1978. The project leader was the ancient historian Reimar Müller . The books were published as volumes 6.1 and 6.2 in the publications series of the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Akademie-Verlag Berlin under the editorship of Joachim Herrmann. Many of the most famous classical scholars were brought together on the project.

The advisory board of the plant included Ilse Becher , Burchard Brentjes , Horst Gericke , Rigobert Günther , Joachim Herrmann, Johannes Irmscher , Heinz Kreißig , Friedmar Kühnert , Wolfgang Müller , Ernst Günther Schmidt , Marie Simon , Jürgen Werner , Helmut Wilsdorf and Gerhard Zinserling . The first volume on Greek cultural history is divided into the subsections Period Early Greece , Period Flowering and Crisis of the Polis, and the Period Hellenism . Volume two on Roman cultural history consists of the contributions Period Roman Republic , Period Roman Imperial Era , Period Late Antiquity and the aftermath of ancient literature . Each part was developed independently and by its own working group under the direction of a section head. Volume one has 536 pages, volume two consists of 688 pages. Volume one was reissued unchanged in 1977 and 1980, volume two was reissued in 1982 in a revised version.

With the conception of the work one wanted to break new ground and summarize scientists from different individual disciplines. Although the book was not least also intended for export and thus for the procurement of foreign currency, not all ideological misinterpretations could be avoided.
