Fritz Juerß

Fritz Jürß (born January 29, 1932 in Ludwigslust ) is a German classical philologist .

After graduating from high school, Fritz Jürß began studying classical philology at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1951 . Since 1956 he was employed at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Initially, he was in charge of editorial projects for the Commission for the History of Religions in Late Antiquity . Then he mainly dealt with the history of philosophy and science in antiquity. He wrote his dissertation “ Studies on the late Byzantine dialogue Hermippus de Astrologia ”; his doctorate took place at Humboldt University in June 1964. In the following years he mostly worked on larger projects, but also on individual studies, mostly on the history of ancient Greek philosophy. In July 1970 the habilitation followed , again at the HU Berlin, with a thesis on the topic " On the cognitive problem among early Greek thinkers ". In the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Academy he rose to the position of research group leader. In 1985 he was awarded the Werner Krauss Medal . In 1987 he was finally appointed professor at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR.
