Edith Schönert-Geiß

Edith Schönert-Geiß (born August 7, 1933 in Dresden ; † June 12, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German numismatist . Her specialty was the ancient Greek coins, especially from Thrace .

Life

After graduating from high school in Dresden, Edith Schönert studied history at the Humboldt University in Berlin . At the age of 23 she got a job on September 1, 1956 at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR ( Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology ), where she has since worked at the resumed Greek Mint , most recently as head of the department.

After their marriage, she took the name Geiß, but published under the double name Schönert-Geiß. In 1960 it was with a dissertation on the provincial coinage of the city Perinthus at Humboldt University doctorate . Her habilitation on the early silver coinage of Byzantion followed in 1966.

For her services to research into Greek coinage, she was made an honorary member of the Romanian Numismatic Society in 1963 and an honorary member of the Numismatic Society of Stara Zagora in Bulgaria in 1987. The city of Stara Zagora granted her honorary citizenship .

When she retired on August 31, 1998, she was honored with a commemorative publication.
