Gottfried Härtel

Paul Erich Gottfried Härtel (born February 12, 1925 in Burgstädt ; † April 21, 2019 in Leipzig ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

Gottfried Härtel passed his Abitur in 1943 and was drafted into the Reich Labor Service in the same year and a little later into the Wehrmacht . Participation in the war and Soviet captivity lasted until 1949. From 1950 to 1953 he worked as an auditor and then began to study history at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig (KMU), which he completed in 1957 as a graduate historian. This was followed by a time as a research assistant in the Department of Ancient History at the Institute for General History of SMEs. Since 1959 Härtel has given the basic lecture "Roman History". The doctorate took place in 1961 with Franz Zimmermann and Siegfried Morenz with a thesis on the subject of remarks on socio-economic questions in Ptolemaic Egypt , followed by a promotion to senior assistant. In 1966 the habilitation took place on the topic of social development tendencies of slavery and the colony in the 2nd century and at the beginning of the 3rd century a. Z. in the west of the Roman Empire. With special consideration of the legal sources , experts were Rigobert Günther , Eugeniusz Konik and Walter Hofmann . There was a renewed promotion to lecturer. From 1974 to 1978 he was head of the prehistory / ancient history department at the SME. In 1976, Härtel was appointed associate professor for the history of antiquity in the history section of SMEs.

Härtel mainly deals with Roman law and Roman legal history and also translated various works by ancient authors into German. In addition, he deals with ancient economic history .
