The Marcellus statue represents Marcellus (42-23 BC), Augustus ' nephew . The statue was previously thought to represent Germanicus , and identification with Marcellus is not certain either.

The statue depicts him as a speaker in the pose of Hermes Logios , the god of rhetoric in the type of Hermes Ludovisi with his right hand raised and a turtle at his side. The fallen heroes of the Battle of Koroneia (447 BC) were first depicted in this way . Chr.) . The marble statue has a height of 1.80 m. The turtle bears the name of the artist Kleomenes :

("Cleomenes, the son of Cleomenes from Athens")

Before 1590 the sculpture was in the Roman Villa Montalto Negroni of Pope Sixtus V. In 1664 it was transferred to France by Louis XIV and exhibited in the mirror gallery of Versailles Palace. In 1802 the statue was moved to the Louvre , where it can still be seen today.
