Battle of Koroneia (447 BC)

The battle of Koroneia took place in 447 BC. Chr. Between the Athenians and the Boeotians place; it is related to the First Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens ( 457 BC - 445 BC ).

Since the Athenian victory in the battle of Oinophyta over Boeotia, Athens had the undisputed rule over all of central Greece. In 447 BC However, the limits of his power became apparent when several cities in Boeotia rose up against Athenian rule. Thereupon Athens sent a force under its general Tolmides to Boeotia, who initially succeeded in taking Chaironeia . But soon afterwards there was a collision near Koroneia at the foot of the Helikon , southwest of Lake Kopaïs . In this battle the Boeotians had the upper hand, so that the Athenians had to retreat from central Greece to Attica. Tolmides, who had ignored Pericles ' advice to await the arrival of reinforcements, had died in the battle. The Athenian defeat was the signal for further apostasy: 446 BC. Megara, Euboea, Andros and Naxos also rebelled against Athenian rule, so that Athens was forced to make peace with Sparta (445 BC)
