Siegfried Morenz
Kurt Karl Siegfried Morenz (* 22. November 1914 in Leipzig , † 14. January 1970 ) was a German Egyptologist and initially German-Christian -oriented historian of religion .
Life and work
Morenz studied Protestant theology , philosophy and the history of religion from 1934 to 1938 and, from 1935, Egyptology, to which his interest quickly turned. In 1939 he declared his collaboration with the Institute for Research and Elimination of the Jewish Influence on German Church Life . He received his doctorate in 1941 , the subject of the dissertation was The Story of Joseph the Carpenter [Historia Josephi fabri lignarii] , which he translated and explained. Morenz was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig (KMU) in 1946 and completed his habilitation with Wilhelm Schubart in the same year . In February 1952 he became a professor with a teaching assignment, in September of that year with a full teaching assignment and between 1954 and 1961 he was appointed professor of Egyptology and Hellenistic religious history and director of the Egyptological Institute of SMEs. Between 1952 and 1958 Morenz also took on part-time management of the Egyptian Department of the State Museums in Berlin. Between 1961 and 1966 Morenz taught as a professor at the University of Basel . Numerous publications on the ancient Egyptian religion gave him an international reputation . In 1968 he spoke out against the demolition of the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig . Morenz became Vice President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in 1966 and remained so until his death. In 1953 he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR , in 1959 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen .
During the Second World War, Morenz was involved as a research assistant in maintaining teaching and saving the museum objects of the Egyptian Museum , took over the repatriation of parts of the outsourced collection and the reconstruction of the institute. The new location was the rooms on the ground floor and the basement in a university building at Schillerstraße 6, in whose basements other relocated museum assets had survived the air raids. In 1951 some of the seized museum objects came back to Leipzig so that Morenz was able to set up a small exhibition with them. Morenz did not experience the reopening of the Egyptian Museum at the University of Leipzig, which was only made possible in 1976.
One of his children, his son Ludwig David Morenz , also became an Egyptologist.
