Life

Dietrich Wildung studied Egyptology , Classical Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Munich and in Paris. In 1967 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the historical consciousness in ancient Egypt : “ The role of Egyptian kings in the consciousness of their posterity. Posthumous Sources on the Kings of the First Four Dynasties ”. Between 1968 and 1974 he worked initially as a research assistant at the Institute for Egyptology at the University of Munich, after his habilitation in 1972 on the subject of “ Imhotep and Amenhotep. Becoming God in Ancient Egypt ”as a private lecturer . In 1975 Wildung became director of the State Collection of Egyptian Art in Munich and remained in this position until 1988. In 1979, Wildung also became an adjunct professor at the University of Munich. In 1989, he succeeded Jürgen Settgast as director of the Egyptian Museum and the Berlin Papyrus Collection and became an honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin . From 1990 to 2000 he and Karl-Heinz Priese formed a dual leadership position in the position of museum director until his retirement, after which he managed the museum alone. In July 2009 Dietrich Wildung retired, his successor as museum director was Friederike Seyfried .

Wildung has been leading the Munich "East Delta Excavation" since 1978, and an excavation project in Naqa, Sudan , since 1995 . From 1976 to 1989 he was Vice President, from 1992 to 1996 President of the International Association of Egyptologists (IAE). Wildung is the holder of the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon, the Order of the Two Nile des Sudans and "Chevalier de l ' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres " in France and a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . Wildung achieved a nationwide sensation in September 2007 when he criticized the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim's exhibition "Mummies - the dream of eternal life" in the media and described it as "mummy pornography". This term was then proposed as the bad word of the year .

Wildung is - often in connection with other Egyptologists and ancient scholars - a very productive author of scientific and didactic literature in his field. He was in charge of several large Egyptological exhibitions. He is one of the vice presidents of the German-Arab Friendship Society .

Wildung is married to the Egyptologist Sylvia Schoske , his successor in the office of director of the Munich Egyptological Collection.
