Werner Kaiser (Egyptologist)

Werner Kaiser (born May 7, 1926 in Munich ; † August 11, 2013 ) was a German Egyptologist .

Life

After his military service, Kaiser studied Egyptology and Prehistory and Early History at the University of Munich and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. Then he was an assistant at the University of Heidelberg . From February 1, 1962, he was director of the Egyptian Museum in West Berlin, where on October 10, 1967 he was able to open the new installation in the eastern Stüler building at Charlottenburg Palace . From December 1967 to 1989 he was the first director of the Cairo department of the German Archaeological Institute . In the 22 years of his work, he created sustainable structures and managed new aspects and expanded areas such as restoration and site management .

Act

Kaiser did fundamental work on chronology at the transition between the predynastic period and the early royal period. In the Nile Delta in particular , his research opened the door to new excavations and thus intensified research into this period of ancient Egyptian history. In particular, the excavations in Elephantine are associated with the name of Kaisers. He also dealt with aspects of art history , especially sculpture, as well as urban planning .

Kaiser was a corresponding member of the Bavarian (1984) and Göttingen Academy of Sciences (1991). He was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute, a real member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute and the Institut d'Égypte .

He has received several honors and awards, including the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
