Rainer Stadelmann

Rainer Stadelmann (born October 24, 1933 in Oettingen / Bavaria ; † January 14, 2019 ) was a German archaeologist and Egyptologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Neuburg an der Donau in 1953, Stadelmann studied Egyptology , Ancient Near Eastern Studies and archeology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1955 and 1956 he took part in the excavations at the Userkaf solar sanctuary in Abusir for four months . In the summer of 1957 he continued his studies at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and received his doctorate in Egyptology on Syrian-Palestinian deities in Egypt in 1960 . He was a research assistant in Heidelberg until 1967 and then completed his habilitation there (1968). From 1968 Rainer Stadelmann was scientific director at the German Archaeological Institute (DAIK) in Cairo , from 1989 to 1998 he was its first director. From 1975 he was honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg .

Rainer Stadelmann took part in numerous excavations, for example in Elephantine , Thebes and Dahschur . He was a corresponding member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .

Stadelmann was married to the Egyptologist Hourig Sourouzian .
