The journal for Egyptian language and antiquity (abbreviations: ZÄS ; Z. ägypt. Sprache u. Altert.kd. ), Founded as a journal for Egyptian linguistics and antiquity , is a specialist journal in the field of Egyptology .
The magazine for Egyptian language and antiquity was founded in 1863 by Heinrich Brugsch and is the first magazine of its kind. It appeared in the first decades in the Leipzig Hinrichs'sche publishing house , after the re-establishment after the Second World War at the Berlin Academy publishing house , since then Takeover by Walter de Gruyter at this publisher. The ZÄS publishes essays and mishaps on all sub-areas of Egyptology, from philology to history, religion and culture to the archeology of ancient Egypt , its afterlife and research. This also includes the areas of demotism , coptology and meroism . In addition, other smaller documents such as obituaries can be published. Reviews are not published.
The languages of publication are German, English and French. Two, previously four, booklets are currently published annually. The editorial team is based at the Egyptological Institute of the University of Leipzig . Currently Susanne Bickel (* 1960), Hans-Werner Fischer-Elfert , Antonio Loprieno and Tonio Sebastian Richter are the editors, Ines Köhler succeeds Lutz Popko as editor.
Initially, the magazine was located in Göttingen through its founder Brugsch and the other early editors Richard Lepsius , Ludwig Stern and Adolf Erman in Berlin . Georg Steindorff , as editor, moved the location of the magazine to Leipzig, where he headed the Egyptological seminar at Leipzig University . He was the sole editor for almost 30 years, but was finally removed from the ZÄS editorial team in 1937 due to the Nuremberg Race Laws . In 1943 the publication of the magazine was stopped. In 1954 it was re-established by Fritz Hintze (1915–1993) and Siegfried Morenz . The editorial staff remained in Leipzig, but responsibility for the content went to the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin. After the fall of the Wall , responsibility was moved back to Leipzig, and since 1992, due to Erik Hornung's appointment to the editorial board, parts of it have also been transferred to Basel . This division of responsibility still exists today.
