Elke Blumenthal (born January 25, 1938 in Greifswald ) is a German Egyptologist .

life and work

Elke Blumenthal is the daughter of Germanist Lieselotte Blumenthal (1906–1992) and the librarian Hermann Blumenthal (1903–1941). She was married to the theologian and binding researcher Konrad von Rabenau until his death in 2016.

From 1956 Blumenthal studied Egyptology and art history at the University of Leipzig . In 1961 she received her diploma, in 1964 she received her doctorate, the subject of the dissertation was " Investigations into the phraseology of the Egyptian monarchy in the Middle Kingdom ". In 1977 the doctorate B corresponding to the habilitation took place , the topic of the dissertation B was the representation and self-portrayal of the Egyptian kingdom. Investigations into the written tradition of the Middle Kingdom .

Blumenthal worked from 1961 first as an assistant under Siegfried Morenz , later as a senior assistant and university lecturer at the Egyptological Institute of the University of Leipzig and at the Egyptian Museum of the University of Leipzig . From 1970 she headed the museum and from 1986 until her retirement in 1999 she was full professor of Egyptology.

Blumenthal is a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences (1991) and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (1990) and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1995). Since 1985 she has been a member of the commission or advisory board of the Ancient Egyptian Dictionary . At times she was the editor of the Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde together with Erik Hornung . She is the holder of the Saxon Order of Merit .
