Lieselotte Blumenthal (born September 30, 1906 in Bielefeld , † October 27, 1992 in Leipzig ) was a German Germanist with the research area of ​​classical German literary studies.

life and work

The daughter of the engineer Johannes Beuchelt and Ida Schröder studied art history, history, archeology and German in Tübingen and Hamburg from 1924. Here she was a student of Aby Warburg , Erwin Panofsky and Robert Petsch and passed the state examination in 1930. After her legal clerkship in 1932, she was a study assistant at a Hamburg private school until 1937. In the same year she became a member of the Goethe Society Weimar e. V. and thus embarked on a scientific career. Since 1939 she worked in Weimar in the vicinity of the Goethe-Schiller-Archive . When she was appointed editor of the Schiller National Edition in 1943 (from 1958 to 1978 as editor), the basis for her life's theme was laid. Blumenthal was elected a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig on December 5, 1960, after she had been appointed professor by the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin the year before .

Blumenthal married the librarian Hermann Blumenthal (1903–1941) in 1937 . She is the mother of the Egyptologist Elke Blumenthal .
