Konrad von Rabenau (born February 3, 1924 in Berlin-Schöneberg ; † July 23, 2016 in Leipzig ) was a German theologian , binding researcher and local politician .

Career

Konrad von Rabenau comes from a Berlin pastor's family . The von Rabenaus came from Saxony . In his youth he was significantly influenced by his father, Eitel-Friedrich von Rabenau , an active member of the Confessing Church and a staunch opponent of National Socialism . Him he helped during the Nazi era , persecuted by the regime to save. From 1942 to 1946 he studied Protestant theology in Tübingen , Göttingen , Jena and Berlin and from 1950 to 1956 he worked as an assistant for the Old Testament at the theological faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , where he wrote a dissertation on the subject in 1955 The emergence of the book Ezekiel from a formal historical perspective on Dr. theol. received his doctorate .

From 1956 to 1973 he was a lecturer in the Old Testament at the Catechetical College in Naumburg , a university that was run under ecclesiastical responsibility. In 1973 he was a Senior Church in the Church Office of the Evangelical Church of the Union (EKU) and the Secretariat of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR appointed (BEK) to East Berlin. Here he worked as a training officer until his retirement in 1989, in this function he designed a concept for a training reform for all church professions and worked on many church bodies.

Only in the course of the political change in the GDR was von Rabenau able to be politically active from 1989 and became an important figure in the time of upheaval in his place of residence Schöneiche near Berlin . His importance was reflected in the fact that he was elected chairman of a freely elected municipal council during the first legislative period .

During his period of service von Rabenau took care of the recording, cataloging and safeguarding of the church libraries in the area of ​​the GDR and set up a church central catalog of historical book holdings. In retirement he concentrated his research on library and binding history . Here, for example, he continued Ilse Schunke's work on the Schwenke collection of Gothic stamps and bindings . In 1995 he was the initiator of the foundation of the AEB ( working group for the collection, indexing and preservation of historical book bindings ) and the journal binding research (EF). He is considered one of the most important binding researchers in Germany.

Rabenau's first marriage to Ilse Marie Doubs (born December 17, 1914 in Leipzig , † January 29, 2000 in Schöneiche ) was childless. However, the von Rabenau couple adopted the later politician Siegfried von Rabenau on March 5, 1954 in Halle / Saale , and von Rabenau was married to the Egyptologist Elke Blumenthal for the second time . Its extensive archive on library and binding history became the property of the Berlin State Library in 2015 .

Most recently von Rabenau lived in Leipzig.
