Ilse Gertrud Schunke (born December 30, 1892 in Dresden ; † December 1, 1979 there ) was a German binding researcher .

life and work

From 1899 to 1908 Ilse Schunke received lessons at the Höhere Töchterschule in Blasewitz near Dresden and at the Elisabethenschule in Dresden. In 1908 she passed the school leaving examination at the Dreikönigsschule in Dresden-Neustadt . From 1912 to 1914 she studied history, art history and literature in Freiburg im Breisgau , Munich , Kiel and Leipzig . From 1913 to 1920 she attended the University of Munich and wrote her dissertation in history with Erich Marcks on the subject of contributions to the politics of Elector Christian I of Saxony 1586–1591 .

In 1916 Schunke worked at the Main State Archives in Dresden and was a volunteer at the Saxon State Library in Dresden from 1921 to 1923 . In 1922 she passed the state examination for the higher teaching post in Leipzig .

In 1923 Schunke became a research assistant at the Saxon State Library. This is where the collaboration with Konrad Haebler began, and with it the study of binding research. In 1928 she went on a binding study tour through southern Germany . Together with Konrad Haebler she published her first important publication: Roll and plate stamps of the XVI. Century .

From 1929 she was deputy director at the State and University Library in Bremen . She was suspended from service in 1937 because of her commitment to Jewish readers . In 1945, she worked for repatriation of after Weesenstein outsourced relics with the Saxon State Library.

From 1938 to 1961 she worked as a freelancer in Dresden with 130 publications on the subject of binding and study visits to Venice , Padua , Bologna , Florence , Naples , London , the Netherlands , Denmark , Graz , Budapest , Prague , Vienna and Rome . In 1949 her resumption of employment at the Saxon State Library was refused for health reasons. From 1962 to 1978 she cataloged valuable book covers for the German State Library in Berlin (DSB) as a freelance worker . From 1965 to 1970 she led courses in binding studies in Berlin , Gotha and Dresden. In 1969 she received a restoration course in Ascona together with Willy Thamm. In 1969 a study visit to Zurich followed .

Shortly before her death in 1979, the results of her research on the collection of the binding researcher Paul Schwenkes were published: The Schwenke collection of Gothic stamps and binding rubbings: sorted according to motifs and determined and described according to workshops . Schunke died in Dresden in 1979 and was buried in the Johannesfriedhof .
