Erik Hornung

Erik Hornung (born January 28, 1933 in Riga ) is a German Egyptologist based in Switzerland .

biography

Hornung received his doctorate in 1956 from the University of Tübingen and completed his habilitation in Münster (Westphalia) in 1963. In 1967 he became a full professor at the University of Basel and was professor of Egyptology there until his retirement in 1998. Among other things, he specializes in studies of royal grave texts from the Valley of the Kings and has published publications on the graves KV1 ( Ramses VII ), KV2 ( Ramses IV ) and KV17 ( Sethos I ) as well as KV57 ( Haremhab ). Hornung is known worldwide as the best connoisseur ofNecropolis in Thebes-West and is editor of the series Der Alte Orient in the library of the Old World . He is a member of the German Archaeological Institute .
