Susanne Bickel

Susanne Bickel (* 1960 in Rome ) is a Swiss Egyptologist .

Life

From 1979 to 1984 she studied Egyptology, Coptic Studies and German Studies in Geneva . She was an assistant in Egyptology at the University of Geneva (1984–1989). After completing her doctorate at the University of Geneva in 1993 with the thesis Les notions de cosmogonie avant le Nouvel Empire, she lectured as a lecturer in Egyptology at the University of Friborg (2000–2011). From 1989 to 1995, she worked as a freelance researcher at the Swiss Institute for Egyptian Building Research and Classical Studies, Cairo . From 1992 to 2000 she was an Egyptologist and editor at the French Archaeological Institute in Cairo (Ifao). She was an assistant at the Egyptological seminar at the University of Basel from 2000 to 2006. She was curator of the Egyptian collection at the BIBEL + ORIENT Museum and heads the SNSF project Life Histories of Theban Tombs and the University of Basel Kings' Valley Project . Since autumn 2006 she has been teaching Extraordinaria for Egyptology in Basel and became Professor for Egyptology in 2015 .

Her main research interests are archeology (funerary archeology of the New Kingdom and the Third Intermediate Period), religious studies and cultural studies (development and implementation of religious ideas and funerary literature of the 3rd and 2nd millennia) as well as iconography and epigraphy (temple iconography). She is co-editor of the journals Archive for Religious History , Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis (Friborg, Göttingen ) and the Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprach und Altertumskunde ( Berlin ). Susanne Bickel has been a board member of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences since 2016 and was President of the Swiss Society for Oriental Classical Studies (2006–2012) and board member of the Conseils scientifique et administratif de l ' Institut français d'archéologie orientale (2008–2011).
