Antonio Loprieno (* 1955 in Bari ) is an Italian - Swiss Egyptologist . From 2005 to 2015 he was Rector of the University of Basel . He has been President of Jacobs University Bremen since December 1, 2019 .

Life

Loprieno passed his European Abitur (Baccalauréat Européen) in 1972 at the European School in Brussels . He then studied Egyptology, Linguistics and Semitic Studies at the University of Turin , where he received his doctorate in 1977 and worked as an assistant until 1981. He then went to the University of Göttingen on a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and completed his habilitation there in 1984. From 1983 to 1986 he was a lecturer at the University of Perugia , partly at the same time from 1984 to 1987 at the University of Göttingen.

In 1987, the University of Perugia appointed him adjunct professor for Hamito-Semitic linguistics. Here he taught and researched until he became Full Professor of Egyptology and Head of the Department for Near Eastern Languages ​​and Cultures at the University of California in Los Angeles from 1989 to 2000 . During this time he was also visiting professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem , at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris and at the University of Heidelberg .

In 2000 Loprieno became a full professor of Egyptology at the University of Basel, where he was for a time the dean of studies of the philosophical-historical faculty, president of the planning commission and president of the library commission. In July 2005 he was elected rector of the university. On February 12, 2015, Loprieno announced that he would be stepping down from his position as rector on July 31, 2015 and that he would return to research and teaching.

On May 8, 2008, the Rectors' Conference of the Swiss Universities (CRUS) elected him its President. On August 1, 2008, he took over the office from his predecessor Hans Weder . On January 1, 2015, the CRUS became part of the newly founded rectors' conference of Swiss universities ( swissuniversities ), in which Loprieno has since presided over the chamber of universities. Loprieno is President of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Study Foundation and Dr. hc from the Université de Strasbourg.

Since July 1, 2015, he has been a member of the University Council of the University of Zurich for the period from 2015 to 2019. Since August 1, 2015, Loprieno has been a member of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Basel, where he conducts research in the fields of academic management and social organization. To this end, he continues to research and teach in the field of Egyptology and at the national research focus on image criticism ( eikones ) in the module "Materiality and semantics of writing". Since January 15, 2016, he has chaired the Austrian Science Council .

Loprieno has been President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences since May 2018 . In the same month he took up the post of President of the European umbrella association of the Academies of Sciences ALLEA . In April 2018 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of Jacobs University Bremen . On November 12, 2019, Jacobs University announced that after Michael Hülsmann's resignation and at the suggestion of the search committee under Lavinia Jacobs, Loprieno would change to the position of President on December 1, 2019.

Loprieno is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , the German Archaeological Institute and other internationally important scientific societies. He is also co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde (ZÄS) and editor of the journal Lingua Aegyptia - Journal of Egyptian Language Studies (LingAeg).

Loprieno is also honorary president of the church council of the Basel Chiesa evangelica di lingua italiana ( Waldensian ).
