Heinz Schulz-Falkenthal

Heinz Schulz-Falkenthal (born May 24, 1922 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † April 19, 2010 ) was a German ancient historian .

Heinz Schulz-Falkenthal put the 1939 war School , and became the Reich Labor Service convened. In 1939 he became a soldier and took part in the Second World War until the end and was taken prisoner by the Soviets. After his release from captivity, he was initially a nurse in 1945, and in 1946 he attended the Wiesenburg / Mark Pedagogical Institute . In 1948 he passed the first teacher examination and began studying history , Latin , pedagogy and philosophy at the Brandenburg State University of Potsdam , in 1952 he moved to the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). In 1954 Schulz-Falkenthal passed the state examination and became a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at the MLU. In June he did his doctorate under Hans Ahrbeck and Hans-Joachim Diesner with a thesis on Roman and Greek pedagogy in classical studies and historiography of the 17th and 18th centuries in Germany. A contribution to pedagogical historiography , then he became a research assistant. Until then, Schulz-Falkenthal was mainly concerned with the reception of antiquities, now he was supposed to work at the LMU primarily on research on late antiquity and support Diesner in teaching. The habilitation followed in June 1969 with the reviewers Diesner and Berthold Häsler with the text Investigations on the origin, development and socio-political significance of the Roman craftsmen's colleges in the republic and early imperial era (principality) . After Diesner left, Schulz-Falkenthal held lectures at the seminar alongside Hans-Dieter Zimmermann and Manfred Oppermann . In 1987 he retired. Since Schulz-Falkenthal was not a member of the SED, he could not be appointed professor. That is why he was subsequently awarded the title of professor in the course of university rehabilitation measures. He was one of the last non-party members to successfully complete his habilitation process in 1969.

Schulz-Falkenthal researched primarily on topics typical of the ancient history of the GDR, on slavery, the economy and the reception of antiquity. He also worked on major projects in the GDR Classical Studies, such as the Lexicon of Antiquity .
