Erhard Hirsch (born April 24, 1928 in Leipzig) is a German classical philologist , Germanist and cultural historian.

Live and act

Erhard Hirsch was born in Leipzig and grew up in Dessau , where he graduated from high school in 1947. From 1948 to 1953 he studied Classical Philology and German at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . After the state examination, he worked in the student language training of his alma mater in Halle (Saale) until he retired .

His actual field of research, however, was the Dessau-Wörlitzer Kulturkreis , for which Hirsch made great contributions. In 1964 he became secretary of the newly founded commission for research and maintenance of the Dessau-Wörlitz cultural area. In 1969 he submitted his dissertation on 'Progressive achievements and reactionary tendencies of the Dessau-Wörlitz cultural area in the reception of enlightened contemporaries 1770–1815', with which he was awarded a doctorate. phil. received his doctorate. A large number of publications on the subject of the garden kingdom and the Dessau Enlightenment followed. He submitted his habilitation thesis 'A Garden for People: Practiced Enlightened Humanism' in 1992. In 1994 he was awarded a professorship .

Hirsch is a member of the Historical Commission of Saxony-Anhalt and the Regional Studies Commission of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig.

Appreciations

Hirsch received the Leibniz Medal of the Academy of Sciences in 1985 and the Monument Prize of the State of Saxony-Anhalt in 1997. In 2001 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit in recognition of his life's work for the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, which has meanwhile been declared a World Heritage Site .
