Arne Effenberger
Arne Effenberger (born August 9, 1942 in Weimar ) is a German Christian archaeologist and art historian for Byzantine art.
Between 1961 and 1966 Arne Effenberger studied classical archeology as well as prehistory and early history at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After completing his studies, he worked as an employee at the National Museums in Berlin from 1966 . He wrote his dissertation at the University of Halle on the subject of Studies on the Tyche of Antioch , and received his doctorate in 1969. From 1973 he was director of the Early Christian Byzantine Collection , later the Museum of Late Antiquity and Byzantine Art, and since 1992 also the reunified collection Merged in 1994 with the sculpture collection, Effenberger was director of the sculpture collection and the Museum of Byzantine Art until his retirement in 2007 . He taught for the first time in the 1983/84 semester at the HU Berlin. There he received his PhD B in 1986 . In 1989 he was visiting professor at the University of Marburg , and in 1991/92 at the University of Bonn . Effenberger has also been an honorary professor for Christian archeology and Byzantine art history at the Free University of Berlin since 1996 . Since 1996 he has been responsible for the redesign, reconstruction and repositioning of the Bode Museum . It opened in October 2006. He retired in 2007.
Effenberger's research focuses on late antique silver vessels and mosaics as well as Byzantine cabaret and especially the historical topography of Constantinople-Istanbul. In 1998 he designed the exhibition Byzantium - The Power of Images in the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum in Hildesheim and in 2000 Constantinople. In 1999 Effenberger received the Winckelmann Medal from the city of Stendal .
