Hans-Georg Severin

Hans-Georg Severin (born September 27, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German Christian archaeologist .

Life

Severin studied from 1960 Christian archeology and Byzantine art history, classical archeology , art history and Byzantine studies at the universities of Berlin, Freiburg and Munich and graduated in 1967 with a doctorate in Christian archeology and Byzantine art history at the University of Munich .

From 1967 he worked as a research assistant, then curator , chief curator and head of the early Christian-Byzantine collection of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in Berlin-Dahlem. In 1990 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin with the venia for Christian Archeology.

After merging the Berlin collection of the Early Christian Byzantine Collection on Museum Island in 1992 (see Sculpture Collection and Museum for Byzantine Art ), he moved to the University of Bonn and taught Christian archeology there until 2006 as C3 professor. He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

His main research interests are late antique and Byzantine cabaret, late antique and early Byzantine sculpture, especially architectural ornamentation, and especially sculpture from the late antique and early Byzantine period in Egypt (so-called Coptic sculpture). He worked in Turkey, Syria and above all in Egypt, most recently in Dair Anbā Bīšūi (so-called Red Monastery ) near Sohag and in Antinoupolis / Sheikh Ibada in Central and Upper Egypt.
