Bue corps (literally "archery corps" or archery brigades) are classic youth organizations in Bergen, Norway . They resemble village fraternities and are organized by district.

Form and function

The tradition is unique in Bergen and goes back at least to the 19th century. Children organized themselves into real youth gangs and later took on military hierarchical structures and ceremonies from the city militia. There were first reports of real youth gangs in Bergen as early as the time of Ludvig Holberg , as did August Konow . Johan Sebastian Welhaven described the Buekorps in his poem “børnelege” (“Children's Games”) from 1839: “Vi stilledes os siden i long wheels, marsjerende tappert i byens gader, vi plyndrede Søstrenes Dukkeskrin and gjorde Mundurer av silke og lin. I krigsraadet taltes med megen vekt om fienden stilling and skjulte planer, paa chefens Kommando, vi stormede kjækt med skilling trumpeter, karduspapirfaner “. (We played in long rows, marched through the streets of the city, plundered the sisterly sewing boxes and made uniforms out of silk and linen. In the council of war we explored the enemy positions and plans, and at the command of our boss we stormed with loud trumpets and waved Paper flags).

As early as the 1850s, the sometimes violent gangs were replaced by the more peaceful and more formally organized bue corps. The young people organize the bue corps independently. Bergen has 14 such corps in different parts of the city. A few other Norwegian cities have set up similar associations, but most of them were dissolved at the beginning of the 20th century.

In addition to military ceremonies, the corps have a function as sports clubs and in the area of social work. The members are between 7 and 20 years old, the adult veterans support the work of the young people. Internally, the corps are divided into private with wooden rifles or bows, officers and drummers. Spring and summer are the main activities, May 17th as the Norwegian national holiday is the highlight and occasion for colorful parades. In addition to the day each brigade was founded, the Buekorpsenes Dag, which takes place every four years, is also important. Girls first participated in 1991, which created some controversy. Girls-only corps and mixed brigades are now widely accepted.

Lørdagskorps and Søndagskorps

Reception for Jimbo Wales at a Wikipedia meeting in Bergen

Lørdagskorps ("Saturday brigades ") and Søndagskorps ("Sunday brigades ") denote two fundamentally different types of bue corps. This does not only mean the day of the parades. Those who had Saturdays off also belonged to the wealthier neighborhoods, such as Nordnæs Bataillon , Nygaards Bataljon and Dræggens Buekorps . The Sunday brigades tended to come from the poorer neighborhoods, where the children also had to work on Saturdays. Laksevågs Bueskyttere and Løvstakkens Jægerkorps still march in simple shirts and not in the more elaborate uniforms that are now common.

Tron Øgrim , a communist and well-known Norwegian Wikipedian from Bergen, contributed to the fact that in 2006 a wiki meeting took place in Bergen with the participation of Jimbo Wales , who was welcomed appropriately.
