The Federal Association of Free Music Schools is a registered association based in Berlin .

In 2019, over 400 member schools are organized as full members in the association. This makes the association the largest advocacy group for free and private music schools in Germany. The association is a member of the German Music Council . There are regional associations in eight federal states.

The highest body is the Federal Assembly. It is composed of the delegates of the regional associations and the regional groups as well as the inner committee. The Federal Association of Independent Music Schools consists of 4 regional associations:

  • Regional Association of Bavaria
  • Lower Saxony-Bremen regional association
  • Regional association of Rhineland-Palatinate
  • Central German Association of Independent Music Schools (for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia)

history

The association was founded on March 19, 1997 in Erfurt. On May 26, 1997 the entry in the register of associations in Erfurt took place. The non-profit status of the association was recognized on September 8, 1997. Since September 28, 1997, the association has been using the name "Bundesverband Deutscher Privatmusikschulen (bdpm) eV" After a complete change in the founding board, the federal office was relocated to Göttingen on January 8, 2000, where the foundations were laid and the development work was carried out. The regional associations were founded under chairman Peter Thies (Oberhausen) and managing director Christine Büttner (Göttingen). In 2004 the association was admitted to the German Music Council. The association has had its current name since July 2016. The federal office is in Berlin.

Aims and work of the association

The certificate "Certified Music School in the bdfm" is intended to prove the music pedagogical qualifications of all teachers at a certified school and appropriate equipment that encourages learning. The association wants to represent the interests of students and teachers as well as the sponsors of the affiliated institutions. The association has the goal of promoting musical life and organizes youth music festivals, concerts and music competitions, as well as continuing education and training for music teachers . Furthermore, the bdfm is represented at the annual music fair in Frankfurt am Main and organizes a congress every two years at different venues. In September 2008 the association published the "Göttingen Declaration" as a guideline for its own work.

Social Fund Kids Love Music

The Federal Association of Independent Music Schools supports children and young people from financially disadvantaged parents with funds from the Kids love Music social fund. By subsidizing tuition fees, the association ensures long-term, quality-assured music education.
