Colorful mosque (Gračanica)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Colorful Mosque ( Serbo-Croatian Šarena džamija; Mejdan Jadid džamija ) in Gračanica is a mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

history

After the warlike events of the late 17th century, there was a large open space, the Mejdan, on the bank of the Gračanka River (now Sokoluša). The mosque, which was completed in the second half of the 18th century, was erected there (records about the foundation from the period between 1763 and 1776), which replaced an older, flood-prone building on the opposite left bank of the river. For the construction of the Karanovac - Gračanica narrow-gauge railway, land had to be surrendered in the 1890s and the railway was led past the mosque on a dam along the river. After a fire caused by flying sparks, the location of the mosque was relocated a little and it was rebuilt in 1932 and 1933 under the direction of Ibro Šuša and Rifataga Mehinagić. It was demolished in 1990 and again replaced by a (now the fifth) new building. During the Bosnian War , the mosque was damaged by shell hits.

investment

The building from the 18th century corresponded to traditional popular architecture. It had a wooden minaret on the west side. The ornate minbar was also made of wood. The minbar from the old mosque was reused for the new building in 1932. The height of the dome of the building from 1990 is 17.65 m, its internal diameter 11.35 m. The height of the minaret is 36 m.
