The Colorful Mosque in Travnik (Bosnian Šarena džamija , popularly called Sulejmanija ) is a mosque in the central Bosnian town of Travnik; it is one of the latest monumental Islamic monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

history

In 1757 the vizier Ahmed Aga Ćamil had the mosque, known as Ćamilija by the residents of the city, built, which burned down in 1815. The new three-story mosque was built in 1816 under the vizier Suleiman Pasha Skopliak. In 1903 the mosque was damaged by fire. It also suffered damage in the Second World War and was then used as a residential building. It was thoroughly renovated in the 1980s.

investment

The facility is known for its rich equipment. The ground floor is designed as a Besistan (market hall) with a vestibule and shops. The prayer room is on the first floor. The facades are decorated with colored plant ornaments. The minaret that may have been taken over from the earlier building is - unusually - on the left side of the mosque.
